Wish List Day

What if we hosted in-store events in late October to come in to stores and create Wish Lists? All stores should have QR Codes on facttags by then. Customers could use our mobile apps to capture items to a wishlist and then share them with friends/family. The local store pages could display an aggregation of the most popular items added to wish lists by customers.

Search Product by Photo

Snap a picture of a product that initiates a search. The search should return the product identified (manufacturer and model number) along with other product information. (I think I saw scr3wlo0se post this idea first in a comment under a different idea.)

Self Checkout

It has been suggested that our mobile apps should enable users to be able to complete their own purchases while in stores without visiting the register.

Adding a barcode/QR Code Scanner to this app

It has been suggested by more than one of this app's early users that we should add a scanner. We agree. We have some ideas around actions the scanner could enable for app users, but your suggestions would be valuable. How would you want to use a scanner inside a Best Buy mobile app?

Offer data destruction with computer recycling

My retired laptops are piling up at home because I don't like the idea of a savvy computer person being able to pull my old data off of my old machines should I "recycle" them or throw them out. Would individuals or businesses PAY a fee for Best Buy to offer data destruction that guarantees computer material recycling and data destruction? http://www.renovods.com (Disclosure: I know the owner o...

Abandon inefficient metal halide lighting

Most stores seem to use high watt metal halide type fixtures and lamps. Changing over to the right florescent fixtures and lamps could provide the same lighting color and brightness by using FAR less energy.

Thanks for these comments - I'll try to address them.

First, it is our goal to make the features and functions similar between the iPhone and Android core applications while taking advantage of individual differences between the operating systems and hardware. We are constantly working to add features and improvements on both platforms. The two applications have never been in exact sync with each other since we started building on iPhone nearly a year before we started building for Android.

It is our intention to add the same Reward Zone features to our Android application as we have recently added to iPhone. We have a few other juicy updates coming first.

Sorry for the trouble. We are working on an update for iOS4. All should be groovy after that.

More cool stuff is coming.

Reader is in the app. QR Codes will begin to appear in stores and inserts soon.

Posted 5 months ago in response to Mobile Checkout App

We really like the idea of mobile checkout in-store and it has been on our radar for months. There are lots of systems and datasets that need to be lined up to make this work anywhere that isn't dotcom, mdot, or a Best Buy cash register. We are getting those systems put together. It's a long process.

Nice call out on the NFC idea. I think it actually stands for Near Field Communication (if we're talking about the same technology).

Since the adoption of NFC on any mass scale in the US is likely a year away, we are considering other options that would deliver this capability sooner.

You can read more about NFC here:

OPB,

Wow! First of all, thank you for putting so much time and thought into the future of our iPhone application. Reading some of your post out loud with others who work on our mobile presence made us say, "get out of our heads." We are thinking about the same future features. You are helping us to affirm some of the direction we intend to go.

We just released a new version to the AppStore and it is under review by Apple. If we pass muster, you should see an update in the next week or so.

Some of your suggestions are in that release. Many more are coming. Our iPhone app is in constant development and we hope to release updates with improved features on a frequent basis.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

Cheers,

Cam

I know the guy at Grainger that helped set that up at Target. Smart move on Target's part.

On both counts... cool. We are just beginning to implement new site functionality to allow the merging of very similar/identical ideas.

As for a gift registry, Best Buy built a universal gift registry that has had limited press so far. We'd love to hear your comments: http://www.giftag.com
