These things are like $30 from the Apple Store. That's ridiculous! You could sell them for $20 and it would still be a ridiculous margin, and people would flock to it.

Ask them. (Their answer will be that it IS standard, just not widely adopted yet.) But it's a moot point for me — my laptop has one of these ports, and I want cheaper adapters for it.

I work at Best Buy and I can assure you that there are definitely generic mini display to VGA, DVI, and Composite/S-Video adapters in our stores. They are made by one of our companies - Dynex - and they sell for $16.99 each. The only catch is they are only available at our stores that sell Macs, Apple software, and acessories. Or on BestBuy.com for those of you that don't have that product assortment at your local store.
